Enhancing Your Child's Vitality

We all want the best for our kids. It bothers us when they wake grumpy, return full or half eaten lunch boxes and demand sweets en route home from school, while complaining of headaches, sore tummies and a note from teacher commenting on Johnny’s poor concentration and aggressiveness. We seem to be aligned for the ‘frequent visitor award’ at our doctor’s office.

Children love to play, create, run around, get dirty and have fun. For this they need vibrant energy levels, physically, emotionally and mentally. There are several important ways we can provide the basis of these energy levels: nutrition, a loving home environment, a celebration of each child’s uniqueness.

Great diet is often the first one that comes to mind. There is so much written on diet these days, which diet is right, which fortified cereal is the best, which fruit juice has the most anti-oxidants, which multivitamin should I use for my child?! So many of the commonly asked questions seek answers that are really irrelevant. We seem to be constantly diverted away from simple truths by clever advertising. ‘Buy my cereal, it is more fortified than the opposition, buy my bread, buy my fruit juice packed with antioxidants, eat this fat-free, cholesterol free margarine...’ (Never mind all the added flavourants, colourants, sugars or preservatives).

What happened to good old fashioned basics? Breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, supper like a pauper. As early as 1978, a study was conducted on 265 children with hyperactivity: 76% of them had blood sugar imbalances. What we know now is that blood sugar imbalances can lead not only to hyperactivity, but also anxiety, ADD/ADHD, depression, fatigue, sleep problems from night terrors to insomnia, to aggressive behaviour, poor appetite and weight gain. Nowadays we see more kids than ever before using drugs for these conditions, from Ritalin to Prozac. Besides the very basic problem that more and more kids are leaving home without breakfast, or are eating highly refined, processed ‘fortified’ cereals and even coffee, there is such an abundance of ‘energy’ drinks and quick fix snacks in tuck-shops. The combination of this sets the child up for an ‘adrenalin-insulin’ rollercoaster. Erratic blood sugar balance is possibly the commonest source of a lot of our kid’s behavioural issues. Add to that the micronutrient deficiencies that these processed foods cause. Common shortages are the omega-3 fatty acids, a central role-player in optimum brain and immune function, zinc and selenium shortages, magnesium deficiencies.

When we add up increasing burden of toxic residue we that our kids are being exposed to, (particularly from colourants, preservatives, pesticides, heavy metals, greater use of pharmacological interventions such as antibiotics and vaccinations), and become aware of the growing nutrient shortages, it becomes easy to consider why we have such a large number of kids struggling to live to their fullest. Mix this up with the growing exposure to television, computer games, Wi-Fi, more cunning advertising methods, louder films, more broken homes, and so on, it leaves us with ample room to embrace positive change that will impact all of our lives.

We hear that our children are our greatest teachers. Before we point that long parental finger at our anxious, headachey or seemingly lazy child, let’s also remember that old adage: monkey see monkey do. Consider your own lifestyle habits, including diet, and see where, as a team, the whole family can transform their lives to something fantastically vibrant.
